Why You Should Support Your Employees With Their Personal Development

Being surrounded at work by a supportive and inspiring team can make an enormous difference to your everyday life. And here at Inspire Me, I’m very fortunate and grateful to have experienced exactly that.

I recently spent 2 months living and working in Paris, the main focus being that I wanted to improve my French (especially my spoken French).

It had been a dream of mine to become fluent in another language for quite some time, so I decided to set the wheels in motion.

I approached our inspirational diva, Andrea Callanan, to see if there was a way that I could make it happen – the response I got was an immediate and resounding, 'yes!'

I wasn’t really that surprised, given that I work for a company that actively promotes an ethos of ‘making people happy’ and prides itself on helping people to fulfil their dreams.

It can be super challenging working for a small business. Particularly one that is as focused on its people as we are.

Despite the many challenges, the team supported me wholeheartedly - we practice what we preach at Inspire Me, stretching the limits on flexible working to the extreme!

Personal development is at the heart of everything we do. Our team building activities, our Superchoirs, our corporate events and training, they all encourage people to expand their way of thinking, experience something exciting and fresh, and for many, it’s an opportunity to take that all important first step on the road to becoming the best version of themselves that they can be!

Investing in the personal growth and development of your employees is beneficial for so many reasons – here are just a few!

1. The more you grow as an individual, the more the relationships between those you work with will improve

Waking up in a new city, having to start speaking a different language, experiencing a different culture, living a different way of life, all of these challenging circumstances forced me to grow as a person in so many ways.

I was continually meeting new people from different walks of life, from a variety of countries and backgrounds and I was learning so much from them too!

Experiences like these can really impact your work life for the better, improve your relationships with your colleagues, and allow you to become more open to new ideas and help you embrace change, all vital things to make a company stronger and more successful.

 2. Personal development can open new doors

Through my language learning experiences in Paris, I encountered people who were working in all areas of business – in the arts, in science, in cutting-edge computer technology industries. I met entrepreneurs, teachers, musicians and people from all sectors.

Who knows what doors could open for you if you just take that first small step and start pursuing your own goals and passions – you may be sowing the seeds for a life you never knew was possible!

3. Feel that feeling of accomplishment!

I did it!

And what a great feeling it was; a real and tangible sense of accomplishing something worthwhile!

I had lived and worked in Paris. I had gotten to know the locals, to know the city. I’d met up with dozens of different ‘language exchange’ groups, I’d even taken a six week intensive French grammar and culture course – I had experienced Paris life as a Parisian!

And I felt an overwhelming sense of satisfaction, achievement and pride.

And you can experience something similar too!

All it takes is a little bit of courage, just enough to seize those opportunities when they come. So, take that risk, step out of that comfort zone and start expanding your horizon!

This really is employee engagement at its most exciting and effective. And the impact it can have on your team and on your clients can be quite remarkable. As our founder, Andrea Callanan, likes to describe it,

"It’s really important that everyone who works for me can pursue their passions, and as an employer, I actively support that." - Andrea Callanan

And as Richard Branson once said,

‘If you look after your staff, they’ll look after your customers." - Richard Branson

So, what’s stopping you?
